Voices from Syria: A Community Concert

March 1, 2019 -

Community MusicWorks hosts acclaimed Syrian composer and clarinetist Kinan Azmeh for a multi-day residency featuring performances of works by Syrian composers, including Azmeh himself.

The collaboration, co-sponsored by the Brown Arts Initiative, includes a Thursday panel discussion featuring the composers as well as representatives from Dorcas International Institute, which provides ongoing support to Syrian refugees in Rhode Island. On Friday, a community concert celebrates the music and food of Syria, and the residency closes on Saturday with a concert featuring the MusicWorks Collective and Kinan Azmeh performing works by Azmeh, Kareem Roustom, and Wang Lu.

Hailed as a “virtuoso” by the New York Times and “spellbinding”  by the New Yorker, Kinan Azmeh’s utterly distinctive sound across different musical genres has gained him international recognition as a clarinetist and composer.
