Sonata Series #1October 17, 2019 -
October’s concert is anchored by a pair of composers associated with Paris at the time—Georges Enescu and Clémence de Grandval. Boston-based pianist Eliko Akahori joins Minna Choi, violin, to present the Grandval Grande Sonata, a piece that lives up to its title in its grand gestures and romantic melodies. Grandval herself had a prolific output in the 19th century, having studied composition with Saint-Saëns and Chopin, including vocal works, chamber music, and orchestral works, but isn’t often heard today. Sebastian Ruth and Eliko will present two works for viola and piano—the brilliant Concertpiece by Enescu, reflective of Enescu’s own virtuosic capabilities as a violinist and violist, and Benjamin Britten’s introspective Reflection.
