NEWS AND UPDATES
“Join together, that’s community. Make your voice heard, music works. Cello, violin, viola, grab your bow. CMW! CMW! CMW, Community MusicWorks!”
At the Community MusicWorks Center Grand Opening Block Party, CMW students participated in the musical parade, “tuned” the building, and served as active audience members in the very first performance in our new Performance Hall, singing along to the CMW Round.

“Everywhere you turn on this project, there’s a small challenge.”
June, 2024: While workers put finishing touches on the new CMW Center, Sebastian took a walkthrough with Pezzuco Construction representatives Ron Pezzuco and Doug Valcourt to chat about materials and features of the soon-to-be-opened project at 1326 Westminster Street.
Providence-based architecture firm 3SIX0 designed the Community MusicWorks Center to be constructed out of mass timber, only the second building in Rhode Island to be using the material as the structure of a building. The building reduces carbon-emitting steel and concrete production by using Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) as the structure. The CLT used in this project was made from gluing together 5 layers of spruce wood and was manufactured in Austria.
CMW, together with 3SIX0 and Pezzuco Construction, worked closely with Healthy Materials Lab, a design research lab at Parsons School of Design, with the goal of making a pioneering, healthy, low-embodied carbon center in the heart of the West End. All building materials and furnishings were evaluated to minimize the presence of toxins known to contribute to childhood disease.
The entire team, from planning to placement of each carefully considered element, has met any challenge in service of a healthy, light-and-music-filled place that our students, neighbors, and friends can call home.

“We can’t live our lives without the other members of our community.”
February, 2024: At the building site of the CMW Center, work is humming along! The roof is on and the walls are weather tight. Windows and doors are in place, with framing underway on each floor. Ductwork and plumbing are in progress throughout the structure.
If you’re in the neighborhood, take a close look and you’ll see a small construction trailer off to the side, adorned by a jewel-toned mural that quietly greets passersby amidst the bustle of the CMW Center coming into place.
This is Providence artist Zeno’s mural, commissioned by CMW. At the center of the piece, surrounded by musical performers, scenes of nature, and ringed by sunflowers, is a depiction of the late Deborah Wyatt, who helmed the nearby West End Community Center as Executive Director, and served as an inspiration and early supporter of CMW, where the very first community violin lessons took place.
In this video, you’ll meet the artist and get a first-hand interpretation of the meaning behind the mural’s featured images and see the artist at work creating his “symphony of color and movement.”
