Saturday, May 2 at 7pm

Community MusicWorks and the Rhode Island Black Storytellers commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the events of the Civil Rights Movement with a musical and storytelling tribute and celebration. This project reflects a commitment and inquiry at Community MusicWorks into the ways that music and young musicians in our community can connect to important social justice traditions. The Rhode Island Black Storytellers will animate the concert with stories related to the 1960s Civil Rights Movement events and characters.

The May 2 concert will feature a world-premiere of a new composition for Community MusicWorks by composer and violinist Jessie Montgomery called “12 Moods,” which interprets Langston Hughes’ epic poem “Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz.” Composer-violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain will perform solo works and introduce his compositions, the String Quartet No. 4, “Maya Angelou,” honoring the work and life of the great writer, and his “Rosa Parks Symphony,” to be performed by the CMW Players, joined by their advanced students. The concert will open with a performance by the Community MusicWorks Daily Orchestra Program’s 7-9 year old musicians.

The concert takes place at the Southside Cultural Center, and in the spirit of good community activities, will conclude with a celebration through food!

Major support for this concert and the commission comes from ArtPlace America, a national funding initiative dedicated to positioning art and culture in a role to strengthen the social, physical, and economic fabric of communities, and from a private commissioning gift to Community MusicWorks.
