The Dancing Concert Trip

On Saturday night, the CMW Fiddle Lab was invited to a concert of the Ebony Hillbillies at Common Fence Music in Portsmouth, RI. As we drove into Massachusetts, over a bridge, and back into Rhode Island again, the three cars full of fiddlers were abuzz with excitment about the evening–but we didn't really know what to expect. When we arrived, the room was full of folks finishing the meals they had brought before the concert. We chowed down on our pizza and grabbed some of the few seats that were still open in the back of the room.

After the second tune, we were invited to come sit up front where students could really see the fiddle, bass, banjo and washboard players at close range. Students commented at how they ended some of their tunes the same way we did (foot in the air) and some of last year's fiddle students were amazed to hear one of their first tunes, "Cluck Old Hen," played and sung by the Ebony Hillbillies!

After intermission, both the concert organizers and band asked everyone to get up and dance…and we did!  I was so thrilled to see Community MusicWorks students leading the way, encouraging each other to dance, and having fun at the same time. We made up dance steps, danced in pairs, in fours, in a giant circle, and even participated in a conga line! What a great way to enjoy this music and to warm up on a cold night. The general feeling was, as Alexandra said, "Can we come back here?"

I was incredibly impressed with the obvious interest the students have
in their instruments and the music they were playing. It was wonderful
to see the next generation of musicians at the beginning of their
musical careers. –Louis Bourbon

Great audience and was fun to hear Scotland with an orchestra. Great job that CMW is doing. –Lou Bourbon

A pre-workshop scene that I loved witnessing: Phase II and III students
were put in charge of helping to tune younger students and teaching them
the workshop tune. For a change, I felt like I didn't need to be in the
room for these things to happen!

Dashboards

A new aspect of CMW’s weekly staff meetings are “dashboards,” where a member of staff gives an update to the rest of the staff about a particular administrative task that they have been working on throughout the year. I have been in charge of our instruments for the last couple of years and volunteered to do the first dashboard on our beloved violins, violas and cellos. I handed out a synopsis of my dashboard (which you can see below), gave a short presentation, got some valuable feedback from my colleagues and then gave a tour of our instrument supply closet.

Instrument supplies

I would be happy to give anyone a personal tour of our instrument storage facility (which shares space with the CMW nursery) or the instrument supply closet and workbench (which shares space with Arlyn’s dining room). Please come on by anytime to 1392 Westminster Street and ask for Jesse, the male kind.
