Minna and I each performed in this special spot in Irene Lawrence's studio–in front of a blank canvas, which Irene hung with the idea that she'd make a painting after our music had filled the space. In addition to Bach, I also gave "Solitary Motion No. 3" its premiere performance–an amazing new solo viola piece composed by Forrest Larson. [Read about Bach Around Town here.]

I can't believe it has been two years, it really does feel like I never left! Of course there are constant reminders that I was gone, for example former students towering over me who used to only come up to my chin. Or hearing stories about Fellows I never had a chance to get to know. But, it's all so encouraging. It really feels like CMW will be here forever.

It's hard to believe, but I think CMW has even gotten better since I was last here. For instance, there's not just one Music Lab class, but three! And now Fridays are devoted to large group ensembles, allowing students at all levels to make music with each other. Oh, and have you heard that Phase II now has their very own gourmet chef!? 

Another addition I'm especially excited about is Media Lab, where I now work alongside the incredible Jori Ketten. Together we're working with students to create their own audiovisual pieces based on Steve Reich's Different Trains, which the PSQ is going to perform early in 2011. Media Lab was just a faint idea floating around when I was a Fellow and now it's a full-fleged program! I'm amazed how the teachers and other staff are always on the lookout for ways to make CMW an even more amazing place for its students and employees, even though it's already pretty darn close to being perfect.

Since I've been back, I haven't only worked in Media Lab. I also regularly help out with the ensembles on Fridays and will be performing with the CMW Players as well. Another reason CMW rocks: it makes use of all its teachers' talents, encouraging us to be everything we're capable of.

A year ago, when my husband and I were thinking about the best place for him to get his PhD, Brown was at the top of the list not just because it's a great school, but because we knew Providence was one of the most exciting and promising cities we had experienced, due in part to all of our friends here at CMW. It's good to be home.

This month, Providence will be blanketed by the beautiful music of J. S. Bach. In addition to a weekend-long marathon concert of Bach's solo works and a weekend of concerts featuring the CMW Players with special guests performing his orchestral music, be prepared to discover performances of the music of Bach throughout the City where you might least expect them!
