Student promotional film

Don Tarallo, CMW's graphic design consultant since 2003, asked two students in his summer class at Bridgewater State College to create a brief promotional video for Community MusicWorks. Here's their most recent draft, posted on Don's website.

Welcoming our new Fellows

Community MusicWorks warmly welcomes violinists Carole Bestvater and Aaron McFarlane to Providence to participate in our two-year Fellowship Program for professional musicians.

Carole recently graduated from Brandon University (Manitoba, Canada) with a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance.

How did Carole learn about CMW? "A magazine article! A family friend sent an article from The Christian Science Monitor with a post-it note attached reading 'I think this is something Carole would be interested in!' After I read the article about CMW in the West End of Providence, I was so excited about this kind of music, this kind of community! I knew I wanted to be involved in any way possible. I kept my eyes open for things in Canada that resembled the program, but even though there are programs in place all over Canada that cater to inner city youth, I never got the same sense from anything else…"

Last year, Aaron was the Director of the Strings Department at the
Mount Kenya Academy in Kenya, the largest program of its type in East
Africa.

What drew Aaron to CMW? "Mostly what drew me to CMW was the sense of community. I came and visited before auditioning because I wasnʼt entirely sure I understood what was happening with the organization. Meeting with members of the Quartet, seeing the office, absorbing Lizʼs enthusiasm, having Sebastian sit and talk with me for literally hours–that visit was pivotal. When I left the office I had no question that CMW was where I wanted to be in September.

Come run with CMW!

The CMW Pavement Raiders are back.

Race1

A group of CMW staff
and friends will be running once again in the CVS 5K on Sunday, September 20th in downtown
Providence. We'll be an "unofficial" team this year, which means you
can be a part of the excitement, too!

1. Register** here: http://www.roadraceentry.com/CVS/signup.php

2. Contact Rachel (rachel at communitymusicworks dot org)
for the details of a meeting spot that morning where we'll gather
together for a CMW staff and friends huddle and cheer before the
race.

A huge thanks and shout out to Arlyn for getting
the CMW Pavement Raiders up and running and for inspiring us to
continue on.

Can't join in the race this time? Come cheer us on in person. Or cheer us on in spirit by helping to keep us running all year long as an organization! Donate here.

**To participate, you must register online by September 15.

Free Goldberg Variations at RISD Museum (9/19 & 9/20)

On Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, Ben Nacar, pianist and Brown University student, is offering free performances of J. S. Bach's Goldberg Variations (all thirty of them!) in the Main Gallery of the RISD Museum. The performances begin at 2 pm on both days, and you need only to inform the Museum staff that you are there to attend the concert to have your Museum admission waived.

The occasion? Commemorating Glenn Gould's birthday (September 25, 1932). See a video clip of Glenn Gould playing the Aria from the Goldberg Variations here.

Earned profile and video

For the CMW website, Jori has created a profile of Earned, the double string quartet composed by Anthony Green which was commissioned by CMW in 2008 and first performed at the John Hope Settlement House in May 2009 as part of the PSQ's mini-Settlement House Tour. The profile includes links to these videos from the premiere. Enjoy!

Sept. 4-6: Rhythm & Roots Kids Academy

An opportunity recommended by Rachel:

Registration for the 5th Annual Rhythm & Roots Cajun Kids Academy is still open.

Cajun Kids Academy (CKA) offers the opportunity for kids to learn to play, sing and perform traditional Cajun music during the Rhythm & Roots Festival, New England's festival of roots music and dance.

CKA is directed by Michelle Kaminsky (fiddler with Magnolia Cajun Band and fiddle teacher) and taught by Michelle and a staff of exceptional teachers of Cajun music. Classes are offered in traditional Cajun fiddle, guitar, accordion and mandolin. Teachers include Michelle Kaminsky, Chris Ash, Rachel Panitch and Andy Stewart (fiddle); Tim Kness (accordion); Martin Grosswendt and Mary Jo Slattery (guitar).

The Cajun Kids Academy meets Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 4-6) during the Rhythm and Roots Festival. Students need to bring their own instrument. However Michelle has commandeered a few accordions for kids who would like to take that class. Please let us know when you sign up if your child needs to borrow an accordion.

There is no cost for children to participate in this three-day program in Charlestown, RI.

Pre-board retreat party

Hey Guys!
It’s Kirby and just wanted to say hi to anyone out there.
Hope you guys had an amazing summer and are as pumped for CMW to begin
as I am. We’ve already started to get busy here but not without a
party. Sebastian hosted a party for the 20 new and returning board members before we had our
board retreat on Saturday, August 8. A very yummy party. Everyone brought something to share. Halfway through, Sebastian whipped up some
very tasty salmon for us to all enjoy.
