Sonata Series Event #2 brings together compositional voices from opposite sides of the globe. Chinese composers Sicong Ma and Yau-Tai Hwang were schooled in the western tradition of classical music but each developed their unique compositional style. Their compositions weave together western musical forms with melodies from Chinese traditional and folk music. Samuel Barber, one of the most celebrated American composers of the 20th century, wrote his Cello Sonata early in his career. Rich with lyricism, emotional depth and dynamic interplay between the two instruments, the Sonata stands among the great works for cello and piano.
