SUMMARY:Live Premiere Event: Our Senior Gala
DESCRIPTION:In solidarity with our students’ wishes on this #BlackOutTuesday\, we have decided to postpone our Senior Gala for 24 hours\, from Tuesday\, June 2 to Wednesday\, June 3 at 6pm. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, June 3 at 6pm on CMW’s YouTube channel for a live premiere event as Community MusicWorks celebrates our graduating seniors with an hour of performances\, tributes\, live chat\, and *special* musical guests! \nCMW has been eagerly looking forward to shining a spotlight on our seniors this evening. As our country grapples with ongoing episodes of violence and racial injustice this week\, however\, we recognize the importance of pausing our normal operations to reflect\, be in community\, and be in dialogue about the pernicious and persistent history of systemic racism in this country that continues to perpetuate violence and harm. While CMW doesn’t consider ourselves part of the commercial music industry which initiated #BlackOutTuesday\, we support and wish to stand in solidarity with the larger significance this day has taken on. Our student board members\, both of whom are seniors\, felt that postponing our Gala by a day would allow them and our larger community to take this day to pause and reflect. We will be excited to shine a well-deserved spotlight on our young musicians tomorrow instead. Please join us. \nClick here to join the celebration! \nWe can’t wait to celebrate with you! \n  \n  \nTo get the latest in CMW updates\, click here to sign up for our enews\, print mailings\, and to follow us on social media.

SUMMARY:Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation: A Pre-Concert Event
DESCRIPTION:A pre-concert discussion led by CMW Resident Musician Jesse Holstein on the topic of “Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation” in anticipation of the Saturday\, February 1 concert at the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts. \nThe line between cultural appropriation and appreciation in music can sometimes be difficult to navigate and distinguish. When does a cultural reference in a piece of music go beyond respectfully honoring another culture or heritage and border into exoticism or spectacle? Can music be appropriative if the composer is referencing their own culture? \nPlease join us as we discuss these challenging topics while looking at three works for string quartet that are inspired or influenced by indigenous folk music. Excerpts from works by Debussy\, Bartók\, and Zhou Long will be performed by the MusicWorks Collective. \nCultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation \nWednesday\, January 29\n6pm reception\, 6:30pm discussion/performance\nProvidence Public Library\n150 Empire Street \nAdmission is free*\n*Seating for this event is full. Email lcox@communitymusicworks.org to place your name on the waiting list.
