SUMMARY:CMW Center Grand Opening Block Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Community MusicWorks Center Grand Opening Block Party \nWe’re opening the doors! In September the newly-constructed Community MusicWorks Center will open to students and the public. For the first time\, CMW will have a permanent home base for young musicians\, a hub for community performances\, and a center for artists and musicians to develop their creative practice. \nCome celebrate with us on Saturday\, September 28! \nFestivities include a kick-off musical parade featuring CMW students and staff\, a world-premiere piece by composer Wang Lu performed by the MusicWorks Collective in our acoustically-sublime Performance Hall\, food trucks\, building tours\, and\, wear your comfy shoes because there will be dancing. \nCMW Center Grand Opening Block Party\nSaturday\, September 28 from 2 to 7 pm\n1326 Westminster Street\, Providence\nAdmission is free \nDon’t miss these events:\n2:00 pm: Building tours\n3:00 pm: Kick-off parade and world premiere performance of composer Wang Lu’s Fabric\n3:30 pm: Food trucks arrive\n4:30 pm: MusicWorks Collective reprise performance\n5:00 pm: More building tours and dancing! \nLet us know you’re coming and we’ll save you a lemonade! \nFeatured on the program is Wang Lu’s composition Fabric\, written especially for this event\, which will be performed by the MusicWorks Collective and CMW students in four dynamic movements. The first features a short musical march down the block from the old CMW storefront to the CMW Center. The performance continues inside with a “tuning up” as students and faculty perform throughout the three floors of the building so that music fills the spaces with harmony and celebration. For the final movement\, we’ll invite our CMW students to gather in the Performance Hall to hear their teachers perform and become the very first audience members in the new space! \nFor this 15-minute finale\, parents\, community members\, and other visitors can support the students’ first-listen experience from just outside the Hall\, or via screens situated outdoors and in the cafe. Then\, we’ll open the hall for a reprise MusicWorks Collective performance of the final movement so that the entire community gets a chance to appreciate the special acoustics and atmosphere of the central performance space. \nWe can’t wait to welcome you! \nLearn more about the Community MusicWorks Center here:\nhttps://communitymusicworks.org/the-community-musicworks-center/ \n Learn more about Wang Lu here:\nhttps://www.wanglucomposer.com

SUMMARY:MusicWorks Collective: Winter Meditation
DESCRIPTION:MusicWorks Collective presents a world premiere piece by composer and former CMW Resident Musician Laura Cetilia and works by Swiss composer and clarinetist Jürg Frey and German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. \nJoin us for a special performance of three works for string quartet that in different ways bring us toward the devotional and aspirational qualities of being human. In the premiere of the newly commissioned work counterglow\, composer (and former CMW Resident Musician) Laura Cetilia takes the audience on a 10 minute journey from the cosmos to the earth and back again\, illuminating the journey through her compositional technique of hearing every point on the length of a violin\, viola\, or cello string. Laura quotes from artist Yayoi Kusama\, who describes polka dots as invitations to the otherworldly: “Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos.” \nLaura has long been inspired by the Wandelweiser Collective musicians\, including Swiss composer Jürg Frey\, whose Third Quartet is a quiet durational meditation slowly progressing through several iconic chords. In his article about the Wandelweiser Collective New Yorker music writer Alex Ross says that “in much of Frey’s music achingly Romantic harmonies drift to and fro\, as if a Mahler Adagio were suspended in zero gravity.” \nThe program ends with the slow movement from the late Beethoven a minor quartet\, Op. 132 “Heiliger Dankesang“ which the composer wrote during his recovery from what could have been a life-threatening illness. This “Holy Song of Thanksgiving from a Convalescent to the Divinity” has been a lodestar for many musicians and music lovers\, alternating between reverent stillness and spectrally celebratory music. \nWe look forward to sharing this wonderous music of contemplation and hope in the darkness of these winter days and amidst the backdrop of the struggling world. \nMusicWorks Collective in Concert\nSunday\, January 14 at 3 pm\nBell Street Chapel\, Providence \nAdmission is free but seating is limited\nMake your reservation here \n
