SUMMARY:Sonata Series Event #1
DESCRIPTION:For this season of our popular Sonata Series\, Community MusicWorks is excited to offer a listener’s choice: Join us in-person at Bell Street Chapel or enjoy the concert online through our first-ever live-streaming event. \nThe Sonata Series spotlights our wonderful resident musicians in programs of solo and duo music presented in collaboration with fabulous guest artists. Each program is curated with works selected by the musicians in combinations that represent a thematic arc and a range of artistic voices. This season\, you’ll hear some familiar favorites and some works that may be newer to your ears. We hope you’ll join us for these very special evenings! \nSonata Series Event #1 features resident musicians Chloë Kline\, viola\, Miguel Vasquez\, cello\, and guest pianist\, Eliko Akahori\, for a rich and moving program of Hindemith\, Villa Lobos\, and Beethoven.  \nPaul Hindemith’s Viola Sonata Op. 25\, No.1 is a tour de force for the unaccompanied viola and shows the composer’s writing in a radical phase. The sonata traverses emotions from the fierce and nearly aggressive\, to pleading moments\, and ending with an elegiac movement. \nHeitor Villa-Lobos’s Elegie for Cello and Piano from 1916 carries a nostalgic and plaintive lyricism throughout both instruments. The Ludwig van Beethoven Sonata No. 4 for cello and piano (Op. 102\, No.1)\, sometimes called the “Free Sonata” because of its departure from conventional form\, may be unexpected in structure but familiar in its musical representation of a wide range of human emotional experiences. \nThis is a program you won’t want to miss! \nSonata Series Event #1\nThursday\, October 20 at 7 pm\nBell Street Chapel\, Providence\nAdmission is free; masks are required during the performance. \nCommunity MusicWorks is grateful to Melanie and Stephen Coon for their sponsorship of the live stream for the Sonata Series in Season 26. \nJoining us in person?\nMake your reservation here. \nJoining us online?\nClick here to enjoy the concert via live stream.\n

SUMMARY:Season 26 Opening Concert
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe MusicWorks Collective Season 26 Opening Concert features selected works highlighting a range of composers’ voices that together invite the listener on a rich and moving emotional journey. \nThe program includes Rhiannon Giddens’ At the Purchaser’s Option\, arranged for string quartet\, a poignant and devastating ballad based on a historic poster advertising the sale of an enslaved mother with a newborn child offered “at the purchaser’s option.” Samuel Coleridge Taylor’s Fantasiestücke for String Quartet brings us into a late 19th-century string sound world of lush textures and tender sonorities through five melodic character pieces. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings\, uniting the audience and performers for a spirited and warm reunion among friends. \nWe can’t wait to share this program with you! \n \nMusicWorks Collective Season 26 Opening Concert\nSunday\, September 18 at 4 pm\nTemple to Music\, Roger Williams Park \nAdmission is free\nClick here to make your reservation \nRain location: Bell Street Chapel

SUMMARY:Sonata Series #3
DESCRIPTION:Our final Sonata Series event of the season features works by two American composers— William Grant Still and George Walker—which may be new to some listeners. \nGeorge Walker’s Sonata for Cello and Piano is rhapsodic and complex and pushes performers to their limits in musical expression and technique. In contrast\, William Grant Still’s Pastorela and Summerland are vignettes of sorts\, conveying Still’s musical musings inspired by scenes of wilderness and the landscapes of the American West. Guest artist Andrei Baumann\, piano\, joins resident musician Minna Choi\, violin\, and Cello Fellow Kamyron Williams for this program. \nYou won’t want to miss this! \n This event will be premiere online Thursday\, January 27 at 7 pm EST\nLink and more information tba

SUMMARY:Sonata Series #1
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis season the Sonata Series returns online and presents varied programs with less-often heard works along with several mainstays of the repertoire\, and features illuminating conversations with the performers. \nJoin us on YouTube on October 14 at 7 pm EST for Sonata Event #1\, where the rich and soulful sonorities of the viola are showcased in two remarkable pieces. \nTwentieth-century American composer George Rochberg wrote serial music for much of his career\, but took a sharp turn in style after a tragic life event left him feeling that atonal writing didn’t contain enough expressive range for his grief. His Viola Sonata demonstrates a departure that is romantic in nature with its bold expressiveness\, that at times hints of his earlier style. Also featured  is the majestic Viola Sonata by Rebecca Clarke\, written in 1919 shortly after the composer emigrated to the United States from Britain. From its riveting opening notes\, the piece draws the listener into a singular sound world and dramatic arc. \n \n  \nThis program is presented by MusicWorks Collective musicians Jake Pietroniro and Lisa Sailer\, joined by guest artist Ivan Tan on piano. \nSonata Series Event #1\nThursday\, October 14 at 7 pm EST\nwww.youtube.com/communitymusicworks \n

SUMMARY:Season 25 Opening Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the open air as we kick off Community MusicWorks’ milestone Season 25!\nCMW opens our 25th season with a celebratory concert at the Temple to Music in Roger Williams Park that centers around the theme of variation\, reflecting the way CMW’s work grows out of a consistent mission that takes on new forms each year. \nWe are revisiting highlight moments from composer commissions throughout the season\, starting with the Kompa Variations by Daniel Bernard Roumain\, which CMW premiered in 2008. This piece was written for our professional quartet side-by-side with a youth quartet\, and this time the ensemble will include alumni\, current students\, fellows\, and core musicians. \nThe Clarice Assad piece Impressions begins with a theme and moves into variations that introduce the sections of the MusicWorks Collective ensemble\, and the Handel – Halvorsen Passacaglia features a whiz bang set of variations\, showing off the virtuosity of the violin and cello. \n \nMusicWorks Collective Season 25 Opening Concert\nSunday\, September 19 at 4:00 pm\nTemple to Music at Roger Williams Park\nAdmission is free \nReserve seating here \nRain location: Bell Street Chapel in Providence
