SUMMARY:Sonata Series Event #2
DESCRIPTION:In the second concert of this year’s Sonata Series\, we explore the special sound world of Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann—deep feeling and heartfelt melodies charted over oceanic musical structures. \n\n\nThe program features Three Romances by Clara Schumann\, played on viola and piano by Sebastian Ruth and Eliko Akahori. You won’t want to miss this evening of music! \n\n\n Sonata Series Event #2\nThursday\, February 15 at 7 pm\nBell Street Chapel\nAdmission is free but seating is limited.\nMake your reservation here.

SUMMARY:MusicWorks Collective: Winter Meditation
DESCRIPTION:MusicWorks Collective presents a world premiere piece by composer and former CMW Resident Musician Laura Cetilia and works by Swiss composer and clarinetist Jürg Frey and German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. \nJoin us for a special performance of three works for string quartet that in different ways bring us toward the devotional and aspirational qualities of being human. In the premiere of the newly commissioned work counterglow\, composer (and former CMW Resident Musician) Laura Cetilia takes the audience on a 10 minute journey from the cosmos to the earth and back again\, illuminating the journey through her compositional technique of hearing every point on the length of a violin\, viola\, or cello string. Laura quotes from artist Yayoi Kusama\, who describes polka dots as invitations to the otherworldly: “Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos.” \nLaura has long been inspired by the Wandelweiser Collective musicians\, including Swiss composer Jürg Frey\, whose Third Quartet is a quiet durational meditation slowly progressing through several iconic chords. In his article about the Wandelweiser Collective New Yorker music writer Alex Ross says that “in much of Frey’s music achingly Romantic harmonies drift to and fro\, as if a Mahler Adagio were suspended in zero gravity.” \nThe program ends with the slow movement from the late Beethoven a minor quartet\, Op. 132 “Heiliger Dankesang“ which the composer wrote during his recovery from what could have been a life-threatening illness. This “Holy Song of Thanksgiving from a Convalescent to the Divinity” has been a lodestar for many musicians and music lovers\, alternating between reverent stillness and spectrally celebratory music. \nWe look forward to sharing this wonderous music of contemplation and hope in the darkness of these winter days and amidst the backdrop of the struggling world. \nMusicWorks Collective in Concert\nSunday\, January 14 at 3 pm\nBell Street Chapel\, Providence \nAdmission is free but seating is limited\nMake your reservation here \n

SUMMARY:Sonata Series #3
DESCRIPTION:Fasten your seat belts for an evening of bold and affecting music performed by Resident Musician violinists Jesse Holstein and Sarah Kim\, joined by guest pianist Jeff Louie. \nOur final Sonata Series event of the season promises to transport listeners into the dazzlingly vivid sound worlds of French composers Francis Poulenc and Gabriel Fauré. The evening’s program includes a rare string piece by Poulenc: the mercurial and wildly imaginative Violin and Piano Sonata\, composed in memory of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. Also featured is a work by Gabriel Fauré\, a hugely influential composer of his time who helped shape the direction of modern French music. His Sonata for Violin and Piano\, written early in the composer’s career\, is abundant with brilliant colors and vivacious interplay between the two instruments. \nThis event will be presented in-person and through an online livestream. SUMMARY:MusicWorks Collective in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Be transported! Join us for a moving musical exploration as the MusicWorks Collective performs three extraordinary works\, including two contemporary pieces that occupy the terrain between classical Indian and western music. The program features the lyrical late Mozart G minor Quintet\, a darkly heroic piece bolstered by the richness of double violas. Reena Esmail’s 2010 Piano Quintet is the composer’s first work blending sounds and motives from Hindustani music and Western composition\, in what would become a theme of her career. The string quartet in Akshaya Tucker’s “In Whose Mouth the Stars” evokes an Indian classical ensemble with its drones and open strings. \nGuest pianist Eliko Akahori joins MusicWorks Collective for this event. \nMusicWorks Collective in Concert\nSaturday\, January 21 at 4 pm\nBell Street Chapel\, 5 Bell Street\, Providence\nMake Your Reservation Here

SUMMARY:Sonata Series Event #1
DESCRIPTION:For this season of our popular Sonata Series\, Community MusicWorks is excited to offer a listener’s choice: Join us in-person at Bell Street Chapel or enjoy the concert online through our first-ever live-streaming event. \nThe Sonata Series spotlights our wonderful resident musicians in programs of solo and duo music presented in collaboration with fabulous guest artists. Each program is curated with works selected by the musicians in combinations that represent a thematic arc and a range of artistic voices. This season\, you’ll hear some familiar favorites and some works that may be newer to your ears. We hope you’ll join us for these very special evenings! \nSonata Series Event #1 features resident musicians Chloë Kline\, viola\, Miguel Vasquez\, cello\, and guest pianist\, Eliko Akahori\, for a rich and moving program of Hindemith\, Villa Lobos\, and Beethoven.  \nPaul Hindemith’s Viola Sonata Op. 25\, No.1 is a tour de force for the unaccompanied viola and shows the composer’s writing in a radical phase. The sonata traverses emotions from the fierce and nearly aggressive\, to pleading moments\, and ending with an elegiac movement. \nHeitor Villa-Lobos’s Elegie for Cello and Piano from 1916 carries a nostalgic and plaintive lyricism throughout both instruments. The Ludwig van Beethoven Sonata No. 4 for cello and piano (Op. 102\, No.1)\, sometimes called the “Free Sonata” because of its departure from conventional form\, may be unexpected in structure but familiar in its musical representation of a wide range of human emotional experiences. \nThis is a program you won’t want to miss! \nSonata Series Event #1\nThursday\, October 20 at 7 pm\nBell Street Chapel\, Providence\nAdmission is free; masks are required during the performance. \nCommunity MusicWorks is grateful to Melanie and Stephen Coon for their sponsorship of the live stream for the Sonata Series in Season 26. \nJoining us in person?\nMake your reservation here. \nJoining us online?\nClick here to enjoy the concert via live stream.\n
