Sonata Series #3
Sonata Series #3
Community MusicWorks’ popular Sonata Series showcases our Resident Musicians and Fellows in duo performances set amidst the splendor of RISD Museum’s Grand Gallery. The series continues as Minna Choi and Chloë Kline join guest pianist Eliko Akahori for a study in historical contrasts — two great sonatas by French composers: one celebrated and one unfamiliar.
César Franck’s 1886 violin sonata might be the most famous in the repertoire: a sprawling drama for the 19th-century salon, as performed by Minna and Eliko. Composer Marcelle Soulage studied with the most well-known names in French music and taught for decades at the Paris Conservatory, but her music remains relatively unknown – Chloë and Eliko’s performance of her 1926 viola sonata will be a discovery not to be missed.
