Sonata Series #2

December 19, 2019 -

The Sonata Series pairs MusicWorks Collective musicians with pianists from across New England for dynamic duo performances. This year’s series features repertoire from composers, some well-known and beloved, others lesser-known but equally compelling, from the 18th Century through the early 20th Century.

On December 19, the program features two of our resident cellists with pianist Andrei Baumann. Miguel Vasquez will perform Beethoven’s arrangements of two arias from Mozart’s The Magic Flute: “Ein Mädchen Oder Weibchen” and “Bein Mannern, Welche Liebe Fühlen”.

We’ll also hear the celebrated “Arpeggione” Sonata by Franz Schubert, performed by Adrienne Taylor. The Arpeggione Sonata was originally written for the Arpeggione, a now extinct instrument that was essentially a bowed guitar, and is often heard these days in its virtuosic transcriptions for cello and piano.
