Here’s the remix competition we’re working on Yeasayer Remix Contest

Today in Media Lab Henry showed us how to sample from stems from samples so we tried remixing stuff. Basically what I did today was get a stem from a sample and then after that I played the instrument over it.

The intro to my remix sounds kind of atmospheric and nonrythmic. It is still a work in progress since I only finished the intro.

Video Class: Day 3

Today we got tripods! It was a little scary – we didn’t want to break anything. We tried out tilting and panning with the cameras on the tripods. We learned that every movement has a knob or turny part to tighten or loosen the movement.

Then we got on the computers and we took our videos from last week and we put them into iMovie and started making mini experimental films.

“It was very fun.” – Dante
“Editing is hard.” – Elvis
“I’m looking forward to making different types of videos.”
“I like using the tripod.” – Malachy
“Editing was hard but fun.” – Jessica

Today in Media Lab I picked up where I left off last week with the project I was working on. Originally I just had a steady bass going on in the back ground. After today I decided I just wanted to solo over it with my instrument. It took me a while to find something that would sound good over the bass part I had. Finally I figured out that strings sounded pretty good with it so I used that to solo and recorded it.

This project is still in progress though – I still think I need to add more stuff to it.

Here’s where I am now:

Video Class: Getting It Started (Day 1)

Today was the first day of our video class!

When we first came upstairs, we talked about ourselves to get to know each other. Then we talked about 4 different kinds of videos that we could make. They are documentary, experimental, stop motion, and narrative. We watched some examples up on the wall with the projector.  Here are some of the films we saw:

“All Talk,” “Light Control,” and “His Day” from the Fast Forward Program on the ICA Teens site
“Little Brother,” and “The Next Musician” from the Real to Reel Film School of RAW Artworks
“Fancyman Chronicles Part 1,” “Richard, Kyle and Josh,” and “Credit Sequence” from RISD Project Open Door
“Panic” by artist Lauren Mackler

We talked about how we felt about what we saw and what types of videos they were. After that we did two things. We made clips of ourselves by taking video and pictures on Photo Booth. While that was going on, we were also taking stop motion pictures of ourselves. We were modeling a credit sequence that Anne showed us. Some of us even got to dress up in some funny clothes. We’ll use it later in the class when we show our movies.

Here’s what everyone had to say about today:

“It was a great first day. It was interesting.” -Jessica
“It was relaxed.” -Malachy
“It’s a good start.” -Elvis
“I liked using Photo Booth.” -Nate
“I loved watching examples of different kinds of films and I’m looking forward to the films that we will make in this class.” -Jori
“CMW kids are really fun and creative.” -Anne
“I liked learning about the four different kinds of videos that I could work with.” -Kirby

Today during media I learned how to record things and put it up on Logic. I tried to make a beat with it, but I didn’t really like it. Also, I learned how to make things fit in to my track. That’s what I learned today.

Here’s a sample of what I made before. Maybe I’ll try again next time with my recording.

Today’s Lesson

Today I learned about synthesized beats & the different sounds that come up with it. As well as fixing the rhythm of the beat when you get off track. I wanted to make a beat using the same sounds as Wiz Khalifa’s ‘This Plane’. I used Analog Lead on the MIDI keyboard & used the Hip Hop heavy drum kit with a stereo bass.

Paul and Josh’s Recap, 4-5-10

So Henry had a plan for today: He asked Paul and I to bring in songs we would like to replicate so we could learn more about how the music we like is put together. So we did so, we brought music from artists such as Kanye West to a producer called Flying Lotus. Henry taught us how some producers would do make this music in Logic Pro. Going over Flying Lotus for example he explained how he created drum loops. We then started to go into the EQ, which is a equalizer, and learned how to make emphasis on a bass line. We also learned how to make the bass pitch higher.

Listen to our original piece (which we made on Saturday at Media Lab Open Hours), then compare it to our edited version which we did with Henry’s guidance and wisdom.

Electronic Music Composition: Day 1

The first Media Lab class started today with nine CMW students ages 9-17!

Betsey Biggs (standing on the right), an electronic music composer currently in residence at Brown University’s Cogut Humanities Center, started the class by leading us on a “sound walk” into the never-before-seen Media Lab space.  After a discussion about listening (what we heard on our walks/the different ways we respond to sounds/how much we notice when we actively focus on listening, etc), we talked about the ways we might use this new space and work together over the next six weeks. We then got on the computers and, with the help of teaching assistants Henry Kerins (on the left) and Micah Salkind, dove into our first Logic pieces. We did a quick “intro to the Mac” session and then explored Logic’s tools by using pre-made loops to create short projects.

Mike Kelley Workshop

Today we were fortunate to be visited by composer and viola wizard Mike Kelley:

“A prize winner at the Primrose International Viola Competition at the age of 18, Mike has been performing and teaching internationally with the Apple Hill Chamber Players for over ten years. An active composer and electronic musician, he has been a Teaching Fellow in Electronic Music at The Juilliard School, and has created scores for various projects at Yale University to the acclaimed disco group Metro Area.”

In front of a live studio audience (see photos here), Mike collected sound from CMW student musicians and created this extraordinary piece:
