George Walker’s Sonata for Cello and Piano is rhapsodic and complex and pushes performers to their limits in musical expression and technique. In contrast, William Grant Still’s Pastorela and Summerland are vignettes of sorts, conveying Still’s musical musings inspired by scenes of wilderness and the landscapes of the American West.
